I was happy to connect with Dr. David Stukus, a pediatric allergist and director of the Food Allergy Treatment center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Stukus wrote a textbook called “Allergies and adolescents: Transitioning towards independent living.” In this podcast episode we talk about how to help kids become more independent in managing their chronic health conditions.
Topics we cover include:
- The importance of including children from an early age in decisions around their medical care
- The best way for parents to discuss the child’s condition with them – what to say, what not to say, and when to say it
- When and how parents can help their children learn to self-manage
- The need for parents to adjust with each developmental stage their child goes through
These topics are something I focus on in my book, as parents used to just be on their own to figure it out. But now they can learn from Advanced Parenting a strategy and framework for out to promote their own child’s independence. Order the book here!
