COVID Antibody Testing in Children

HuffPost quoted me in their article on COVID antibody tests for children. New CDC estimates suggest that 58% of kids have COVID antibodies. Parents may be wondering if their child has already contracted COVID without even knowing. However, antibody tests aren’t always a reliable way of determining that. If the infection occurred months prior or the child had a mild case, antibodies might not be detected. For parents who are deciding whether or not to vaccinate their children, prior infection is not a reason to skip vaccinating. It is unknown how long natural immunity lasts and the vaccine can still provide benefit. Antibody testing is not useful for most children.

Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation.
