Tips for Navigating the Formula Shortage

I was contacted by theSkimm to discuss the formula shortage that so many families are struggling with right now. In the article, you can read my tips on what to do (and what not to do) if you are affected by the shortage.

A great place to start if you’re having a hard time finding formula is your community. Social media can be really helpful to crowdsource options. Members of local parenting groups might have extra formula or know of which stores have received new shipments. If possible, try not to switch between formula brands, especially if your baby has feeding difficulties or allergies. Changing formulas can disrupt baby’s system and lead to discomfort and increased fussiness. But if needed, your pediatrician can help guide you on which other formulas to try. Please do NOT make your own homemade formula. It’s almost impossible to make something that meets the strict nutritional and safety requirements of infants.

Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation.
