I was happy to connect with Dr. David Stukus, a pediatric allergist and director of the Food Allergy Treatment center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Stukus wrote a textbook called “Allergies and adolescents: Transitioning towards independent living.” In this podcast episode we talk about how to help kids become more independent in managing their chronic health conditions.

Topics we cover include:

  • The importance of including children from an early age in decisions around their medical care
  • The best way for parents to discuss the child’s condition with them – what to say, what not to say, and when to say it
  • When and how parents can help their children learn to self-manage
  • The need for parents to adjust with each developmental stage their child goes through

These topics are something I focus on in my book, as parents used to just be on their own to figure it out. But now they can learn from Advanced Parenting a strategy and framework for out to promote their own child’s independence. Order the book here!

Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation.
