Halloween safety during a pandemic

When I’ve been asked about Halloween during the pandemic, it’s tough to respond. Trick or treating in the crowds of Manhattan is a scale of exposure really different from where I grew up in North Carolina. While it’d be easiest to say one-size-fits-all advice, the truth is parents have to evaluate the risk, consider the benefits, mitigate the risks as best they can, and then decide. TLDR? If you can stay masked, outdoors and away from crowds it should be alright! I hope everyone has a lot of fun this Halloween regardless – we’ve all earned it.

I contributed to this article on Maisonette where we discuss how to implement the recommendations for your family. While I don’t speak about Halloween specifically in my book, I give a lot of general advice for how we approach decisions and balance the risks and benefits given what we know about the science, so if you are struggling check out my book.

Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation. I am not your child’s doctor, and this is not medical advice.
