Making decisions during a pandemic

In my posts recently I’ve been focused on helping families make decisions. How do we calculate the risk of our exposures and decide what is safe? How do we mitigate our exposures responsibly but not excessively. I spoke with the sweet mothers from Not Your Mother’s podcast to review what we know about coronavirus and how to handle these decisions. Click here to listen.

From their website the key takeaways:

  • Educate yourself with what’s going on to understand the risks and benefits when it comes to making a decision.
  • As a parent, you feel like you should know the answer because we feel like there is a right answer.
  • But the reality is that the right answer is the answer you choose.
  • Doctors are there to provide you the information and help you assess the risks and benefits, but the decisions are ultimately up to you.
  •  Don’t worry about pleasing or being judged by your pediatrician. They are there as your ally. Share your concerns with them.
  • When you receive advice from anyone on how you parent, think about where that advice is coming from. Is it evidence-based by science or personal experience.
  • Personal experience is valid, but just prioritize what makes sense for your family.
  • When it comes to COVID-19, the inflammatory system happening in children is VERY RARE.

Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation. I am not your child’s doctor, and this is not medical advice.
