I was featured in an article on Forbes Health about newborn hiccups. The article discusses potential causes of hiccups, remedies, and when you should consult your baby’s doctor.
Almost always, hiccups in newborns are normal and harmless. The nerves that control your baby’s diaphragm and breathing are maturing. Sometimes, a mother can feel a baby hiccup in utero – also normal. When you see your newborn hiccup, you are actually witnessing the rapid development of their nervous system from the outside. Most often, babies are not bothered by hiccups. However, if you’d like to help your baby stop, there are a couple of things you could try. Sometimes trapped air in the stomach can cause hiccups and a burp can help release this. You could also try offering a pacifier to relax baby.
