Vacations before children are vaccinated

NBC News asked me to weigh in on how to consider family vacations before children are vaccinated. It’s complex – how do you think about the risk to your family, the risk to your community, and the public health risk? It’s personal – where do you fall on the spectrum of risk tolerance? Officially for now the CDC guidelines still recommend to avoid travel, but we have many reasons to think that it can be done with low risk especially as rates begin to fall and we inch towards herd immunity this summer. Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation. I am not your child’s doctor, and this is not medical advice.
