Many parents of young children are eagerly awaiting approval of a vaccine for their children. After 2 years of pandemic restrictions, the vaccine will give a sense of normalcy and peace in moving on with our lives. Bloomberg interviewed me for an article about Covid-19 vaccines for kids under 5.
Although unvaccinated young children are at a lower risk of getting seriously ill from Covid, there are still substantial benefits to vaccination. A safe vaccine that reduces the severity of illness stands to do a lot of good. In addition we expect vaccines to reduce the risk of developing long covid and MIS-C and decrease the chances of transmitting the virus to others. Another important benefit of vaccinating kids under 5, for both parents and children, is more enabling more stable childcare and a decreased need for precautions such as masking and frequent testing.
