We must get children back to school

I wrote an opinion piece about how important it is for us to find ways to open schools. We should work collaboratively with parents, public health officials, teachers and staff to decide what exposure risks are worth the benefits of school to children. Children really need school, not just to boost the economy but for their social, developmental, and academic benefits. School will help to avoid the risks of mental health issues from isolation, worsening academic disparities and decreased physical activity. Given that kids are lower risk for catching and spreading coronavirus than adults, doing our best to mitigate schools should be enough.

We need to advocate for our children. Budgets are tight and getting as many as possible back to school safely in the fall will take resources! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Everything posted is my opinion and doesn’t represent the opinion of my current or prior employer. All patient references in stories are fictionalized (new gender, different issue, etc) to protect privacy. Recommendations are made in a generic way intended for education. The ideas I have may not fit every child or every family. Parents should use their judgment and ask their own doctors if they feel something doesn’t make sense or may not be safe in their specific situation. I am not your child’s doctor, and this is not medical advice.
