When a parent has to travel and be away from home for an extended period, it can be hard for toddlers to cope. I was asked by Parent Co. for my tips on how to make this time easier for toddlers.
One of my favorite tips, is to use storytelling to prepare your toddler for the general idea of separation several days or weeks before having to travel. The song “Grownups Come Back” from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and the books Owl Babies and The Kissing Hand are some of my favorites. As for when to actually tell your toddler you are leaving, I think that is best to do either the day before or day of. Telling them too far in advance can make anxiety worse. And the best time to leave is during a time of day when your toddler is the happiest and more likely to tolerate the actual leaving better. When talking to your toddler, your tone is more important that what you say. When parents are anxious, kids can pick up on that and also become anxious. Try to be calm and confident and to make the goodbye short and quick.
